I didn't spend much time at all on the first controller, i wanted to see what i could get away with as far as minimum prep-work goes. In the long run the prep-work aka the sanding is essential, there are no short cuts. So a real good scratch in the last controller will penetrate and the paint will lift off the surface of the controller. Not to say its not still very durable its just not a bullet-proof paint job, and for something like the Xbox controller which goes through a good amount of abuse (no i dont throw my controller when i get frustrated) its important to be extra durable.
This controller i did the works on. I spent a fair amount of time sanding the surface very smooth to get it paint ready. I used various different grit papers from 320 all the way to 1500. The first coats of paint (the Blue) was applied very carefully and is extremely durable. Nothing is ever getting through this layer of paint, i even tested it out by scratching a piece of metal against it and it didn't even mark it up. To differentiate my controller i wanted to have a unique design. I went with a type of checked pattern. On the right half of the controller, and overlapping to the backside, its a basic squared checkered pattern. Moving to the left it sort of fades out into a longer rectangular checkered pattern. I applied this pattern by meticulously applied masking to the controller and then spraying black paint over it. this was very time consuming and if i were to do it again i would come up with a more efficient way of doing it, perhaps even getting some acrylic paint and doing it by hand.
I applied a light dusting of metallic flakes on the entire controller to add a little extra effect to it. Its a lot more noticeable in certain lighting conditions in real life then in the pictures. The final coats were a with a crystal clear acrylic spray paint. I used Krylon Fusion paints for all of my plastic painting. They have proved the best results of any of the spray paints i have ever used.
The battery pack is incomplete and only has a base layer of black. I use it all the time in my other controller and haven't yet had the opportunity to finish it. Since it is the more expensive, play and charge battery pack for the Xbox, i will also be ensignating it with my gamertag, as a preventative measure from thiefs.
